Photography by Cameron Lee The "National Battle of the Bands" has firmly established itself as the premier kickoff event for the fall marching band season, showcasing electrifying performances from the nation's top Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) marching bands. This dynamic event captivates a wide range of audiences—spanning teens, young adults, families, college-educated professionals, blue-collar workers, and active seniors—while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of HBCU bands. As the largest African American event in Texas, the National Battle of the Bands has awarded over $200,000 in scholarships and generated a significant $20 million economic impact for Houston and Harris County. The 2022 NBOTB weekend drew more than 55,000 attendees, over 10,000 participants in additional events, and featured over 2,200 band members.
