Texas State Historical Marker Honors the Astrodome

The Harris County Historical Commission will dedicate a new Texas State Historical Marker for the Astrodome this Tuesday afternoon, May 29 at 3:00 PM. The event will be held on the west side of the Astrodome at NRG Park. Parking should be accessed through Gate 9 at Westridge and Kirby. The lot will open at 2:00 PM that afternoon.

Houston Chamber Choir’s 23rd Season opens with a concert that illustrates the joy of musicians, highlighting our singers’ favorite pieces. This will be an evening of “the best of the best” by composers like Morten Lauridsen, Eric Whitacre and Bob Chilcott, along with John Tavener and Arvo Pärt. The Kinder HSPVA Chorale, under the direction of Shannon Carter, and the Parker Elementary School Advanced Chorus, under the direction of Marianna Parnas-Simpson, will be our featured guests as they present pieces that have kindled their youthful love for singing. The evening will end with a glorious performance featuring all three choirs singing together.

A $9.675 million rehabilitation project will breathe new life into the famed community social club

In keeping with its role as a pioneer in creative placekeeping, Project Row Houses announced today that the rehabilitation and renovation of the historic Eldorado Ballroom is underway. One of the nation’s most acclaimed venues for Black musicians, “The Rado” was founded by Houstonians Anna Johnson Dupree and Clarence A. Dupree in 1939, when segregation laws prevented Black Americans from socializing in the same venues as white people. Project Row Houses, whose mission is to empower people and enrich communities through engagement, art, and direct action, leads the project with an investment of $9.675 million that will bring the building back to the cultural, social, and economic hub of the community that it once was.
