The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Houston Branch (“NAACP”), League of United Latin American Citizens, District VIII (“LULAC”) and a former bank employee have filed a major federal racial discrimination lawsuit against Capital One Bank, a publicly-traded national bank. The suit alleges Capital One has engaged in a conscious and deliberate plan to close banks in Black and Latino communities while keeping banks in white communities.

It was wall-to-wall pink and green on Sunday, January 8, 2016, at the First Colony 24 theaters as the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. took over the theater. The ladies were in mass numbers to support the film Hidden Figures that tells the story of three extraordinary women – Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson - who made NASA history by helping with the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. All three women are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

To support incoming freshmen students at HBCUs and to encourage them as they embark on a new chapter of their lives, The Breakfast Klub is hosting a free celebratory event, HBCU Sendoff. Approximately 150 students are expected to attend. Registration is required.

The Houston Area Urban League (HAUL) will celebrate 49 years of providing services to the Greater Houston community on Saturday, June 17th, 2017 with its Equal Opportunity Day Gala featuring a dinner, Honoree recognition and entertainment. The event will be held in the Ballroom of the Americas at the Hilton Americas Hotel, beginning at 6 p.m. with a reception, followed by the program and dinner at 7:00 pm. This year’s featured entertainment will be Texas Southern University.
