Don’t Suffer Alone: STOP Domestic Violence

This time last year domestic violence was on the rise in Houston. Increasing by almost 10%, victims were now trapped in an enclosed space 24/7 with their abuser. No help from family and friends was available as all were practicing being socially distance while quarantining. Although staying at home to stay safe was enacted to keep everyone was safe from catching the coronavirus, it gave abusers the opportunity to take total control over their defenseless victim(s). Through various community partnerships with the city of Houston, a message was sent out to let survivors know that they don’t have to suffer in silence.

Mayor Sylvester Turner led the rededication ceremony of Emancipation Park, together with OST/Almeda Redevelopment Corridors TIRZ#7, Emancipation Park Conservancy and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. A day long festival (10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) was held in conjunction with the rededication.

Study shows cancers with high levels of the SLC7A11 gene may respond to glucose transporter inhibitor treatment

New findings from researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center about how some cancer cells become “addicted” to glucose could open up fresh approaches to therapy strategies for cancers with high levels of an amino acid transporter called solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11). This includes lung cancer and renal cell carcinoma, the most common type of kidney cancer.
