Houston Grand Opera’s Opera to Go! Presents Monkey & Francine in the City of Tigers

Houston Grand Opera’s (HGO) Opera to Go! presents the world premiere of Monkey & Francine in the City of Tigers, with music by rising composer Kamala Sankaram and libretto by David Johnston, February 2 and 3, 9:30 and 11 a.m. both days, at Heinen Theater, 3517 Austin St., Houston. Performances are free. The 45-minute family opera is inspired by Indian and Chinese mythology and includes music influenced by Bollywood. A hilarious fable, Monkey & Francine in the City of Tigers demonstrates the power of teamwork as a monkey prince and his brainy sister outwit a hungry crocodile and escape from the City of Tigers.

NFL Foundation Matches Mr. McNair and Houston Texans’ $1 Million Contribution to Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Efforts

The NFL Foundation will match Mr. McNair and the Houston Texans' $1 million contribution to the United Way Relief Fund to address the immediate needs of those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. The total $2 million contribution will support first response efforts by the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and the United Way of Greater Houston. Houston Community College Creates Community Partnership to Address Protective Gear Shortages in Houston

Houston Community College (HCC) announced that San Jacinto College, University of Houston at Sugar Land, Fort Bend County Judge’s Office, TX/RX Labs, Alief ISD and Houston ISD have joined efforts to help address personal protective equipment (PPE) shortages for local area medical professionals and first responders in the fight against COVID-19. The collaborative effort – known as H-Force – will be a comprehensive community partnership platform bringing together members’ resources, technologies and expertise to address the Houston area’s growing needs amidst this global crisis.

The Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) is excited to present El Franco Lee II: Mid-Career Survey, curated by HMAAC’s Chief Curator Christopher Blay. This exhibition is the first solo museum exhibition of the Houston-based artist El Franco Lee II’s work. The exhibition opens with a preview reception on Friday, June 30, from 6-8PM and the exhibition will be on view through September 2. The Honorable Rodney Ellis, Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner, Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation (Foundation), the Foundation’s Young Professionals Group (YPG), Julia C. Hester House and the Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation in celebration of their NeighborWorks Week announced today 14 Little Free Libraries, or Barbara’s Book Boxes, have been donated by Oxy and MD Anderson to the Fifth Ward Community. Northwestern Mutual – Houston Receives $50,000 Grant in Honor of Childhood Cancer Efforts

Grant funds will support children and families through The Periwinkle Foundation and Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

Children and families affected by childhood cancer often find themselves lacking supportive communities that understand their medical and emotional needs. To help provide this support, Northwestern Mutual employees and financial advisors across the country dedicate their time to fundraising and volunteer efforts with childhood cancer-related organizations. This year, the Northwestern Mutual – Houston office has been recognized as one of the company’s Childhood Cancer Impact Award winners for its contributions to the cause, receiving $50,000 to be donated to local nonprofits.
