Texans Mercilus and His Teammates bartend for Cause

Houston Texans Whitney Mercilus and his teammates will roll up their sleeves and trade in their cleats for shakers and become bartenders for a good cause. Mercilus and his foundation, The WithMerci Foundation, will host Cocktails 4 A Cause, Thursday, May 2, 2019, from 5 to 8 PM at Poitín Bar & Kitchen (2313 Edwards St #100 | Houston, TX 77077). Cocktails 4 A Cause was created to help raise money for the WithMerci Foundation's annual back-to-school event, Returning 2 Learning.

Art League Houston is proud to present, Bitter Waters Sweet, an exhibition of new work by Fort Worth artist Letitia Huckaby, the 2022 Texas Artist of the Year. In her exhibition, Letitia Huckaby explores the legacy of Africatown, the historic community near Mobile, Alabama, that was founded by a group of West African people who were trafficked to the U.S. as slaves shortly before Emancipation, and long after the Atlantic slave trade was banned.

In her exhibition, Letitia Huckaby explores the legacy of Africatown, the historic community near Mobile, Alabama, that was founded by a group of West African people who were trafficked to the U.S. as slaves shortly before Emancipation, and long after the Atlantic slave trade was banned. The ship that brought them, the Clotilda, was scuttled in Mobile Bay shortly after delivering its cargo in 1860 to conceal its illegal activity. The wreckage was rediscovered in 2018 and is currently the subject of active archaeological research.

Miller Theatre Undergoing Improvements

After Miller Outdoor Theatre’s 2017 season came to a close, the lawn seating portion of the hill at Houston’s always-free performance venue was fenced off as it undergoes improvements, including drainage repair to the hill, waterproofing to the front of house audio booth, major sod repair, aeration and top dressing. Additional repairs include seat wall repair in the East plaza dining bosque and a new electrical power transformer.

ACLU of Texas Comment on Court Ruling in Houston Homelessness Suit

A federal court issued a ruling yesterday that will allow a City of Houston ordinance that criminalizes homelessness to go into effect. Specifically, yesterday's decision permits the police to ticket or arrest homeless people who live in a tent on public property.
