Rarely seen outside of Los Angeles, 46 paintings and works on paper from the renowned collection of the Hammer Museum at UCLA will tour to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, from October 15, 2023, through January 21, 2024. Major works of art from across four centuries will be presented in Rembrandt to Van Gogh: Masterpieces from the Armand Hammer Collection. The exhibition reflects the collecting interests of the L.A. museum’s founder, collector Armand Hammer, through outstanding examples of European art dating from the Renaissance to the early 20th century, with additional important works by American artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

On Thursday, August 18, eight HISD middle schools will kick off their participation in Verizon Innovative Learning, Verizon’s award-winning education initiative, which addresses barriers to digital inclusion and helps drive equity within education for some of the most vulnerable populations across the country. In partnership with Digital Promise, the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program provides free technology devices, internet access and innovative STEM learning programs to teachers and students to help give under-resourced students the technology, education, and opportunity they deserve. Being part of the program will keep students connected, helping to facilitate learning wherever it is taking place.

The version of the Sandra Bland Act bill passed by the Legislature is like an alcoholic beverage where the ice has melted. It no longer retains the Texas House’s potent non-jailable provisions that stipulated no one could be arrested for committing an offense that is punishable only by fine. Although it remains an amazing bill, it does not speak to the case of Sandra Bland, who should never have been arrested and found dead days later in a Waller County jail. The bill addresses how law enforcement will be trained, jails will be equipped and what resources will be available to people with mental illness, substance abuse or intellectual differences.
