Emmy Award-winning actor Robert Guillaume, best known as the title character in the TV sitcom “Benson,” died Tuesday. He was 89. His wife Donna Brown Guillaume told the Associated Press he died at their Los Angeles home of complications of prostate cancer. Guillaume often played acerbic, dry-witted, but ultimately lovable characters like the butler Benson Du Bois, which he created on the 1977 series “Soap,” before his character was spun off in 1979. Guillaume won Emmys both for “Soap” (as supporting actor) and “Benson” (as lead actor).

According to The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, the Board of Trustees at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA, will make changes to two of its buildings, Robinson Hall and Lee Chapel, after a student and faculty committee issued a report on how the university’s history is represented on campus. As we head further into summer, my City Council colleagues and I continue to fight for district projects in the City of Houston's Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). Since being sworn into office, I continue to see, year after year, the amount of tax dollars for CIP projects allocated inequitably across the 11 council districts. This year's proposed plan, which was given to city council members late last week, shows a total of 7% of all CIP dollars going towards District E, doubling the amount of CIP dollars we received last year. Last year District E only received 3% of the total CIP dollars distributed among Council Districts.

Former Houston Community College board member Chris Oliver will serve 70 months in federal prison, U.S. District Judge Vanessa D. Gilmore decided. Contractors allegedly paid Oliver a total of more than $250,000 influence contract awards between 2009 and 2016. Oliver plead guilty to accepting a $12,000 bribe from an HCC contractor, a bribe for which the Federal Bureau of Investigation provided funding.
