Columbia University to Invest $100 Million in Faculty Diversity Programs
Lee C. Bollinger, president of Columbia University in New York, has announced a major new commitment to increase the diversity of the university’s faculty. Over the next five years, Columbia University will invest $100 million in the effort to support recruitment and career development for professors, doctoral, and postdoctoral students who have traditionally been underrepresented in higher education.

Dave Chappelle won his first Emmy Award on Sunday, thanks to his “Saturday Night Live” hosting debut just days after Donald Trump was elected president. Chappelle’s November 12 “SNL” episode delivered the franchise’s season high in adults 18-49 and total viewers, and the show’s highest 18-49 rating since 2013.

Dr. Vivian Penn Honored by University of Virginia Medical Center with Hall Dedicated in her Name
As part of University of Virginia’s efforts to reconcile its controversial past, Wednesday, it formally dedicated Pinn Hall in honor of Dr. Vivian Pinn. Pinn is one of the earliest African-American women to graduate from the UVA School of Medicine. She went on to found the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health.

January 2017, entrepreneur Deidre Mathis, won her first business pitch of the year at the Texas Black Expo, taking 2nd place and $1,500. Soon after, she beat out dozens of teams to win 3rd place and $4,000 during the Houston Community College Business Plan Competition.

Fifth Ward Documentary Film Festival to Premiere at the DeLuxe Theater Aug. 4-6
The DeLuxe Theater and Texas Southern University will host the premiere of The Fifth Ward Documentary Film Festival. The event will be held August 4 through August 6, 2017 at the DeLuxe Theater on Lyons Avenue and I-59. The festival will screen three documentaries – I Am Not Your Negro, Porgy & Me, Mickey Leland: Citizen of the World – and discussions with documentary principals following selected screenings.

Senator Kamala Harris comes to Bettendorf
The 2020 presidential race is underway, and candidates are starting to make the rounds in Iowa. California Senator Kamala Harris visited Bettendorf for a town hall meeting.The Waterfront Convention Center in Bettendorf originally set out 550 chairs for the town hall meeting, but had to bring in over 200 more for the large crowd.The California senator announced her run for the democratic nomination in January 2019.
