Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act (1964) and the Voting Rights Act (1965). As part of the academic community, I celebrated the increases in high school and college graduation rates. Also, during the same period since the 1960s, the poverty rates decreased because of measurable gains in median household incomes.

The City of Houston has been awarded a $150,000 grant from the National League of Cities (NLC), as part of a new initiative to make true economic opportunity a reality for youth and young adults who are marginalized from quality education and career opportunities.
