Secretary DeVos to Visit Port Aransas and Houston, Texas

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos will travel to Port Aransas and Houston, Texas, this week to see firsthand the ongoing rebuilding and recovery in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and to assess how the Department of Education can continue to coordinate and support the state, schools and students.

AARP Texas Survey: Voters 50+ to Decide Houston’s Next Mayor

A new survey commissioned by AARP Texas revealed that 84% of registered voters who are 50-plus will “very likely” vote in the 2023 Houston Mayoral election. The survey also revealed that 89% of those polled want Houston’s next top city leader to address crime and safety, calling those issues “top priorities” for this powerful voting bloc. Another 75% said jobs and the economy are essential to them. These issues will likely influence voting behavior at the polls in city elections this coming November.

Mayor Sylvester Turner’s vision for Houston as a high-tech innovation hub took several steps forward after a successful economic development and trade mission to Israel recently. A private meeting with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sparked a discussion regarding healthcare data mining and personalized medicine. Meetings with the minister of Energy and Infrastructure and the mayors of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Beersheba and Al-Bireh focused on Smart City management, energy connections, cyber security and tourism.

The University of Houston-Downtown Receives $2.588 Million Title V Grant for Pathways to Teaching Program

Project Promises Significant Impact on Local Economy for Decades

As part of a continued effort to serve both students and critical community needs, the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) was recently awarded a U.S. Department of Education Title V Grant for $2,588,121 over five years, allowing UHD to continue its Pathways to Teaching in Critical Areas of Need (PTCAN) Program as part of the College of Public Service’s Urban Education department. The program is designed to produce educators in key and underserved areas in the Houston area, in such areas as bilingual education. The program will continue to improve the Houston workforce and economy for generations to come.

On Saturday, October 14, 2023, AAMA – the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans – will celebrate its annual Illumine Gala at The Ballroom at Bayou Place from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. The Illumine Gala is AAMA’s largest fundraising event of the year, and supports the legacy nonprofit organization’s year-round programs and services, which include early child care services, two public charter schools in Houston, prevention and counseling services, adult and opportunity youth learning programs, community engagement services, and much more, across the Lone Star State. Each year, more than 10,000 individuals across the state are served by AAMA.
