AIDS Foundation Houston, Inc. (AFH) hosted the annual World AIDS Day Luncheon on Friday, December 6, 2019, at The Ballroom at Bayou Place. Luncheon chairs Carrie Brandsberg-Dahl, Adrian Dueñas and Duyen Nguyen, with presenting sponsor Chevron, welcomed more than 500 guests to the annual fundraiser.

This Monday, October 23, marks the beginning of early voting for the Tuesday, November 7 General Election, which includes 18 candidates for Houston Mayor, four candidates for controller, 23 running in 11 separate districts, and 27 for at-large City Council. City Propositions, County Bonds, and State Constitution Amendments are on the ballot. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

New Data Reveals Neighborhoods Impacted By Urban Heat Effect
On August 7, 2020, the Houston Harris Heat Action Team (H3AT)—a collaboration be- tween Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC), the City of Houston, Harris County Public Health (HCPH), and The Nature Conservancy of Texas (TNC) — held a one-day urban heat island mapping effort with the help of 84 community scien- tists, and funding support from Lowe’s and Shell. The effort was part of the 2020 Heat Watch program led by CAPA Strategies and the National Oceanic and At- mospheric Administration (NOAA), and it resulted in a total of 320 square miles of Houston and Harris County being mapped by local residents.

Wells Fargo & Company, NeighborWorks® America and its local network members today announced the NeighborhoodLIFT® program will expand for Houston with a $6.1 million commitment by Wells Fargo to boost local homeownership. The Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) is excited to present El Franco Lee II: Mid-Career Survey, curated by HMAAC’s Chief Curator Christopher Blay. This exhibition is the first solo museum exhibition of the Houston-based artist El Franco Lee II’s work. The exhibition opens with a preview reception on Friday, June 30, from 6-8PM and the exhibition will be on view through September 2. City of Houston Releases Climate Impact Assessment Projecting Future Houston Climate Trends
The City of Houston’s Mayor’s Office released the Houston Climate Impact Assessment, to better illustrate how climate change will impact Houston’s future based on lower and higher scenarios of future climate change. The assessment, conducted by Anne Stoner and Katharine Hayhoe of ATMOS Research & Consulting, studied 25 separate future climate indicators, including the number of days with temperatures above 100 degrees, the number of nights above 80 degrees, total annual precipitation, days with precipitation above 4 inches, and the annual number of dry days.

BikeHouston is celebrating the funding of 15 new bike stations and an electric cargo trike, thanks to a $50,000 grant from Green Mountain Energy Sun Club. The new electric cargo trike will eliminate the need for gasoline-powered vehicle transport for BikeHouston, while strategically placed bike stations with racks and air pumps at local businesses and trail entry points will encourage more usage.
