10 African Americans Named Rhodes Scholars, Most Ever

The latest group of U.S. Rhodes scholars includes 10 African Americans — the most ever in a single Rhodes class — as well as a transgender man and four students from colleges that had never had received the honor before. The Rhodes Trust on Sunday announced the 32 men and women chosen for post-graduate studies at Oxford University in England.

Fourth- and Fifth-Grade Students Portray Dr. King and Honor Muhammed Ali at Event

On Friday, Jan. 6, fourth- and fifth-grade students representing 24 Houston ISD elementary schools will compete at Thompson Elementary to earn one of 12 finalist positions during the semifinal round of the 21st Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition. Students will present original speeches, not to exceed five minutes, addressing the topic: “If Dr. King were alive today, what would he say about Muhammad Ali’s contribution to society?”

HISD Statement On Safety Protocols

Implementation of strong safety protocols for students and staff during face-to-face instruction remains the top priority in the Houston Independent School District. After continued review and guidance from health and education officials, HISD is updating its process for moving between COVID-19 Gauge levels to ensure multiple metrics are considered, including from both the Harris County Public Health Department and the Houston Health Department, as well as an ongoing assessment of reported cases and data trends in our district.
