With 44 million consumers owing student debt that now reaches $1.5 trillion and still climbing, a lot of people want to better understand how and why this unsustainable debt trajectory can be better managed. For Black consumers who typically have less family wealth than other races and ethnicities, borrowing is more frequent, and as a result, often leads to five figure debts for undergraduate programs and well beyond $100,000 for graduate or professional degrees.

Rep. Reynolds Unites With Civil Rights Organizations to Address Race-Motivated Incidences Across Texas & Minority Underrepresentation

Today, House Minority Whip, Representative Ron Reynolds proudly joined many House and Senate colleagues, along with multiple civil rights organizations to address racially-motivated incidences of harassment and intimidation that have escalated across the country since the November elections of 2016. Leaders from the African American, Latino, and Asian communities called upon Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Speaker of the House Joe Strauss to address the hateful rhetoric, racial tension, and uncivil political speech that has escalated since the election of President-Elect Trump.

Last Wednesday, the Joint Center hosted an online briefing on accessible vote-by-mail and safe in-person voting for Black communities. The session explored safeguards to ensure an accessible vote-by-mail system that does not dilute Black votes (e.g., prepaid postage, a postmark deadline of Election Day, the ability for third parties to collect and return sealed ballots, and quick notification of and ability to remedy any signature matching issues—see this Brennan Center brief showing vote-by-mail racial disparities without these safeguards). Participants also discussed the need to maintain sanitized and uncrowded in-person polling places for those who choose not to vote-by-mail.

As I walked inside of the Fountain of Praise sanctuary where the public memorial for George Floyd was being held, a cold, eerie, and chilling feeling came over my body. It caused me to take a pause stopping me in my tracks before I took my next step. I began to replay the audio from the murderous video of the tragic day that Floyd died in an almost nine-minute encounter in my mind.
