Survey: Teen Girls’ Interest in STEM Careers Declines

New Survey by Junior Achievement Asks Teens about Career and Job Goals

A new survey by Junior Achievement (JA) conducted by the research group Engine shows that only 9 percent of girls between ages of 13 and 17 are interested in careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). This is down from 11 percent from a similar survey in 2018. Teen boys’ interest in STEM careers increased slightly to 27 percent, up from 24 percent in 2018. The survey of 1,004 teens was conducted from April 16 to 21, 2019.

Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia Introduces Bill to Require Congressional Access to ICE Detention Facilities

The Public Oversight of Detention Centers (POD) Act would provide members of Congress access to immigration detention centers within 48 hours of request

This week, Rep. Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) alongside Reps. Jason Crow (CO-06), Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), and Hank Johnson (GA-04) introduced legislation to prevent the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from blocking members of Congress from access to detention centers that house immigrants and migrant children. The Public Oversight of Detention Centers (POD) Act would promote transparency and accountability by allowing members of Congress to gain access to detention facilities within 48 hours of request. The bill would provide entry to both juvenile and adult facilities. To date, there are over 200 immigration detention facilities with the detention bed number a record high of 49,000.

National Endowment for the Arts Acting Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $80 million in grants as part of the Arts Endowment’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2019. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $25,000 to the Houston Symphony to support the Community-Embedded Musicians (CEM) initiative. Art Works is the Arts Endowment’s principal grantmaking program. The agency received 1,592 Art Works applications for this round of grantmaking, and will award 977 grants in this category.
