Civil rights leaders and Capitol Hill lawmakers are standing up and speaking out against a recent Department of Education (DOE) decision to sever its working relationship with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). In separate and independent actions Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and staff are being challenged and corrected as to its understanding of a sole office having complete authority and enforcement regarding the nation’s student loans.

Six months ago when Mayor Sylvester Turner announced Art Acevedo as the new head of the Houston Police Department many were scratching their heads wondering who this man was. Yes, why would groups like the NAACP and National Urban League have this long- standing love affair with construction unions. These unions have racial animist. They are the antipathy of civil rights and democracy. Yet, when you attend annual meetings of these organizations you find a big presence of various construction trades sponsoring their events. It is like mixing oil with water. It just doesn’t make sense.

St. Peter The Apostle Catholic School Closing
After 77 years of educating children in Houston’s Third Ward, St. Peter The Apostle Catholic School is closing its doors. Houston Public Media reports the superintendent over the archdiocese’s schools, Debra Haney, said that a lot of the decision came down to financial pressure. It’s also a reflection of the toll that charter schools have put on not just public schools, but also parochial schools like St. Peter’s.
