Fifth grader wins Houston ISD’s 2023 MLK Oratory Speech Competition
Houston ISD is getting an early start to the MLK holiday. The district held its 27th annual MLK Oratory Speech Competition on Friday. Twelve fourth and fifth grade students from different elementary schools across the district presented three-to-five minute speeches. This year’s theme was “What would Dr. King say to us today about hope for tomorrow.”

Claire Oliver Gallery Announces Solo Exhibition Remains By Artist Adebummi Gbadebo Remains Will Tour Museums Following New York City Debut On View January 13 - March 11, 2023, Harlem, NY
On view, January 13 – March 11, 2023, the exhibition continues Gbadebo's years-long exploration of her ancestral origins centered on the plantation on which her forbearers were enslaved and currently buried, called True Blue in Fort Motte, South Carolina. Gbadebo's interrogation of this lineage through her work encompasses her signature multimedia works crafted from indigo, rice paper, cotton, human hair, and new ceramic pieces fabricated from the soil where her enslaved ancestors were buried. These will be displayed alongside historical artifacts salvaged from antebellum architectural fragments from sites built on the labor of her forebears.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Events taking place in Hampton
Events in Hampton will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. throughout the month. The day is observed on the third Monday in January each year. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day became a federal holiday in 1983 when President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law. Despite it becoming a federal holiday, the day was first formally celebrated in 1986 and it wasn’t until 2000 when all 50 states decided to honor the day. The day observes the work that Dr. King contributed to the Civil Rights Movement.
