In Search of Unity: A Houston Perspective of A Yates High School Loss (George Floyd): Dr. Bertie Simmons Speaks
The killing of George Floyd, a member of the Yates High School family, has poignantly exposed and made abundantly public the lives that blacks have lived for centuries in America. It is heart-breaking and calls several things to question: Why have we not, as the “privileged” class, done something over all these years to bring justice to the black community – a community that has made amazing contributions to our society? Why have we as the “privileged” closed our eyes to the unjust treatment they have endured all their lives? Our doing nothing shines a bright light on our lack of respect, understanding and empathy for others. The blame rests on our shoulders for our insensitivity and lack of courage to stand up for what is right.

Houston Tackles Prescription Drug Addiction Amongst Teens with Interactive Online Safety Program
On Tuesday, November 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., Kroger executives and community leaders will launch the Prescription Drug Safety program, an innovative digital course about prescription drug abuse prevention. Taking place at Madison High School (13719 White Heather Drive Houston, TX 77045), the event will introduce an online drug misuse awareness program, which was developed by leading education technology company EVERFI.

TSU Awarded $3.3 Million Grant From the Kellogg Foundation
The Barbara Jordan – Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University (TSU) was recently awarded a $3.3 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The grant will expand The HBCU Gulf Coast Equity Consortium, a collaborative project involving Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and community-based organizations (CBOs) formed to address health equity, social inequality and the vulnerability of children and families in the Gulf Coast.
