Houston Educational Support Personnel, State House Members to Hold News Conference on Proposed HISD Custodian, Bus Service Cuts

—The Houston Educational Support Personnel, three state representatives and a trustee for the Harris County Department of Education (and the daughter of U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee) will hold a news conference on Thursday, Feb. 8, to detail the devastating impact on students of the Houston Independent School District’s proposed budget cuts, which would eliminate some bus routes and limit school cleanings to a few times a month.

Performing Arts Houston presents the return of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (the Trocks) as part of their 50th anniversary tour, on January 23, 2024, at Jones Hall. The all-male ballet company founded in 1974 will perform parodies of classical ballets Swan Lake and Paquita, as well as Yes Virginia, Another Piano Ballet, all performed en pointe.

A new way to fund healthcare is now available. The Houston Healthcare Initiative (HHI) is a member owned, non-profit medical co-op that is now open for business. Led by Houston based neurologist Dr. Steven Goldstein, the HHI (http://houstonhealthcareinitiative.org) will replace traditional health insurance for qualified individuals and families and provide incentives for members to adopt healthier lifestyle habits.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston holds Town Halls focused on health and safety during the “reopening” of Houston and the state

As part of its ongoing outreach to constituents during the Covid 19 pandemic, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston (BGCGH) held three virtual Town Halls last week to provide critical information about what parents (and teens) should know to keep themselves and their children safe in the midst of the “reopening” of Texas. Additionally, BGCGH hosted a Special Session via Zoom with community partners, staff and board members, including Ericka Brown, M.D.; Coca-Cola representatives and special guest speaker David Persse, M.D., Health Authority for the Houston Health Department, to discuss issues around safely reopening Boys & Girls Clubs for in-person programming this week.
