For more than three decades, the University of Houston-Downtown’s (UHD) College of Public Service (CPS) has been training teachers with stunning results: More than 2,000 teachers trained by UHD have been placed in area school districts. In addition, UHD’s undergraduate teacher-preparation program was among just 23 percent of programs nationwide recently awarded an “A” by the National Council on Teacher Quality for teaching the science of reading.

During the event, Green presented a $5 million check symbolizing the community project funding that METRO will receive.

St. Luke’s United Methodist Church broke ground August 2 for construction of a new, modernized Woodshop, to be located at 2614 Edloe Street, directly across the street from the main church campus. A ceremonial “turning of the dirt” took place with the volunteers who make up this storied ministry, along with other church members and St. Luke’s staff.
