Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes or modified graphene nanoribbons may be suitable replacements for platinum for fast oxygen reduction, the key reaction in fuel cells that transform chemical energy into electricity, according to Rice University researchers.

BOOM! Earl Lewis Thomas was a force that no one wanted to challenge on the football field. The NFL defensive man was one of six that encompass the Seattle Seahawks’ Legion of Boom that put the team in the history books for their six consecutive seasons. The NFL, family, and friends are mourning the powerful wide receiver as Thomas passed away in Houston at the age of 71 succumbing to COVID-19 virus.

ACT-SO Programs and Events to Open Convention Week
Cornelius Smith Jr. to Host ACT-SO Competition at 108th National Convention in Baltimore
The NAACP’s 108th Annual Convention begins with the NAACP ACT-SO (Academic, Cultural, Technical and Scientific Olympics for high school students) final competition and awards. Hosted by Cornelius Smith Jr., an ACT-SO alum and star of ABC’s Scandal, this year, 700 of the nation’s top students will vie for laptops and college scholarships in the 39th annual ACT-SO competitions themed “Victory in Everything”. ACT-SO includes 32 competitions in STEM, humanities, business, and performing, visual and culinary arts. Almost 300,000 young people have participated in the program since its inception in 1978.

$4.5M Gift Supports Student, Faculty Success and New Lecture Series on Equity and Social Justice
Transformative Gift Initiates First Matching Gift by ‘$100 Million Challenge’ for Total Impact of at Least $6.5M
The University of Houston has received a $4.5 million gift from the Thomas Michael Panos Family Estate to establish an endowed chair in the Cullen College of Engineering; a scholarship endowment available to students throughout the University; and an endowed lecture series focused on equity and social justice, which will reside in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. An additional $2 million has been matched by the University’s new “$100 Million Challenge” Aspire Fund. This is the first matched gift since the fund was established, making the total impact of the Panos Family Estate gift at least $6.5 million.

On Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Midtown Houston will host Lounge on the Lawn in Midtown Park, the first all-day event for residents, Houstonians and visitors to the Bayou City. Lounge on the Lawn will feature diverse cuisine, live entertainment and family-friendly fun on the lush 30,000 square foot lawn. Opera in the Heights Presents "The Sweet Silver Song," A Benefit Concert for Harvey Victims
Opera in the Heights will present a concert free to the public on Saturday, September 9th at 3:00pm at Grace United Methodist Church in the Heights at 1245 Heights Blvd. as a service to victims of Hurricane Harvey. The program of all vocal music gets its title, “The sweet silver song,” from a lyric in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “You’ll never walk alone,” from Carousel, which in context reads, “At the end of the storm is a golden sky and the sweet silver song of a lark.” Performances will feature opera singers affiliated with the company, all of whom are donating their talents to the cause of bringing music to the community and raising funds for relief efforts.
