Houston ISD Board of Education Trustee Jolanda Jones @JolandaJones @JonesJolanda speaks with Houston Style Magazine's Totally Randie @TotallyRandie about her love of tennis legend Zina Garrison and supporting Black children to the wonderful world of tennis and the arts. The Zina Garrison Tennis and Education Academy a non-profit organization, kicked off a competitive doubles tournament where two pairs “took it to the net” to see who would reign supreme. VIP tents were located at three locations helmed by Hell's Kitchen winners and contestants, Chef Michael Gabriel, Chef Rich Mancini and Chef Bev Lazo. A dinner and auction followed at the home of Philanthropists, Richard and Marty Finger. Author and Celebrity Chef, Jake Smollett, oversaw the EPL foodie experience. Wimbledon champion, Martina Navratilova and Zina Garrison entertained guests along with the Merlot Music of Houston Band featuring vocals from Liz Vaughn. A fierce auction bidding for a portrait by New Orleans' visual artist, filmmaker and activist, Brandan "BMike" Odums took place. There was also be a dedication of Zina Garrison's memorabilia from her 14-year professional career to the Smithsonian Museum of African American History. 2022 Comcast Agent of Change - Maria Hernandez
A Mexican immigrant and domestic violence survivor, Maria has overcome adversities that have driven her to advocate for safe spaces in underserved communities. She founded Madres del Parque (“Mothers of the Park”) to bring about true transformation and local environmental sustainability in the most densely populated and diverse area of Houston that notably lacks green space. Because of her advocacy, Harris County Commissioners Court initiated a contract for a master plan design for Burnett Bayland Park, located in Southwest Houston’s Gulfton community.

As an Indian immigrant, she had few resources and career opportunities when she came to Houston, yet she found hope and motivation by giving back to others in her community. Rani earned her way to become the CEO of World Oilfield Machine and is now giving back to her community through The Energy Project-- a global service leadership internship for students at the Energy Institute High School (EIHS) in Houston’s Third Ward. The program focuses on inclusion in the energy field and allows students to problem-solve today’s local energy challenges through innovation.

The Southwest Regional office of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF hosted the fourth annual UNICEF Audrey Hepburn® Society Ball to celebrate UNICEF’s lifesaving work for children around the world and honored the outstanding humanitarians who make our work possible. UNICEF Ambassador and actress Angie Harmon received the Spirit of Compassion Award for her commitment to saving and protecting the lives of children in the United States and around the world. Rosanette and Harry Cullen were presented with the Margaret Alkek Williams Humanitarian Award for their extraordinary contributions to the causes of children, health and education in the city of Houston and the state of Texas through the Cullen Foundation. Emceed by Deborah Duncan, host of Great Day Houston, the evening featured a live performance by Grammy Award®winning recording artist and humanitarian Michael Bolton and an appearance by Mayor Sylvester Turner. Funds raised at the event will support UNICEF’s work to end child trafficking in the United States and around the world.

The 142nd NRA Annual Convention, Meetings and Exhibits was held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in the heart of downtown Houston, TX, May 3-5, 2013! With over 550 exhibitors covering over 400,000 square feet of exhibit hall space, educational seminars, celebrities, and fun filled special events, there was something for everyone! Dawn Paul spent the day exploring the products from every major firearm company in the country, checked out the hunt of a lifetime in the exclusive outfitter section, and viewed priceless collections of firearms in the gun collector area.
