Amy Pierce @ the 4th Annual UNICEF Audrey Hepburn® Society Ball
The Southwest Regional office of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF hosted the fourth annual UNICEF Audrey Hepburn® Society Ball to celebrate UNICEF’s lifesaving work for children around the world and honored the outstanding humanitarians who make our work possible. UNICEF Ambassador and actress Angie Harmon received the Spirit of Compassion Award for her commitment to saving and protecting the lives of children in the United States and around the world. Rosanette and Harry Cullen were presented with the Margaret Alkek Williams Humanitarian Award for their extraordinary contributions to the causes of children, health and education in the city of Houston and the state of Texas through the Cullen Foundation. Emceed by Deborah Duncan, host of Great Day Houston, the evening featured a live performance by Grammy Award®winning recording artist and humanitarian Michael Bolton and an appearance by Mayor Sylvester Turner. Funds raised at the event will support UNICEF’s work to end child trafficking in the United States and around the world.

Mayor Turner gives his remarks on the TEA taking over HISD
Mayor Turner shares his thoughts on TEA taking over HISD. Under the current superintendent and new school board, there has been significant progress made in HISD. Forty of 50 former D or F schools are in a much better status today. “This takeover is not about the quality of education. If you look at the Texas Legislature, several bills have been filed to pre-empt the authority of the city of Houston and other local jurisdictions. HISD happens to be one of those local jurisdictions. You cannot run school districts, cities, and counties from Austin, Texas. You tell me how this benefits the kids? Instead of grading the students and the teachers, the Texas Education Agency needs to grade themselves on how they are handling this matter. I give them an F." - Mayor Turner

Dallas Cowboys Running Back DeMarco Murray along with teammates and celebrity friends traded in their uniforms and helmets for plates and aprons. Many enjoyed four courses of Kirby's signature cuisine, fine wine and an auction all in the name of a great cause. Proceeds benefited the DeMarco Murray Foundation, which is focused on bettering the lives of DFW-area youth by providing educational support, opportunities and resources. Sid’s mantra is “do more for others than you do for yourself”. He’s known for his optimism, ability to forge strong partnerships, and roll up his sleeves to work side by side with his peers in addressing the most critical issues for youth in marginalized communities. Drawing inspiration from his role model, his father, Sid has become an ally, an advocate and champion for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at work and in the community — most recently as an executive board member at the YMCA of Greater Houston. Under his board leadership, the Y’s first computer lab was established and eventually became the foundation for its path in bridging the digital divide.

Houston Police Running Man Challenge There is no ticket required to see the Houston Police Department's answer to the #RunningManChallenge. This video, which is sweeping through police agencies across the United States and internationally, typically showcases a police department's assets, personnel and dancing skills. HPD officers throughout the department dusted off their dance moves to participate in this video and included officers of all ranks and ages, including Acting Chief of Police Martha I. Montalvo.
