AKAs Takeover the Movies to Support Hidden Figures
It was wall-to-wall pink and green on Sunday, January 8, 2016, at the First Colony 24 theaters as the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. took over the theater. The ladies were in mass numbers to support the film Hidden Figures that tells the story of three extraordinary women – Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson - who made NASA history by helping with the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. All three women are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Mayor Turner Alarm By State to Takeover HISD
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner ran late on Wednesday morning, March 1, 2022, for the Houston City Council. Over the weekend, he met with several people, including legislators and Commissioner of Education Mike Morath, to discuss the future of the Houston Independent School District (HISD). The commissioner did not give him a definitive answer. However, the legislators did inform him of the state's intention to takeover HISD. According to Turner, Texas Education Agency (TEA) has intentions of replacing the Board of Education, Superintendent Millard House, and taking over the entire school district.
Houston’s Third Gun Buyback Scheduled for Feb. 18th at Deussen Park
Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis and Sheriff Ed Gonzalez have announced a gun buyback at Deussen Park on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 8 a.m. to noon. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner also attended the news conference. The event is part of Harris County’s initiatives to prevent gun violence. This is the third gun buyback co-sponsored by Harris County Precinct One in seven months, resulting in about 2,000 firearms being taken off the street. Residents will be able to turn in firearms in exchange for gift cards worth $50, $100, $150, or $200 at the upcoming buyback, with no questions asked.

The Hungry Free Summer
School bells ringing are a bigger relief for some families than just getting children out of the house. It means that their children will have two well-balanced meals a day at school. One in six children across America doesn’t know where their next meal will come from. Texas is a distant 43rd for children’s overall well-being with a devastating 25% of the children living in poverty. Houston ranks second in the nation for children living with food insecurity. Harris County has the second highest rate of child food insecurity in the nation. A hungry free summer seems unobtainable but in summer 2019 it was made possible.

Ask any child and most can list a number of reasons why they love their mother. No matter what the reason they all center on one word, love. She was not the best student and was often in trouble. People were ready to give up on her until divine intervention struck when her social worker sent her to the Laugh Factory Comedy Camp where she took her pain and used comedy as therapy to find her true passion.
Incredible Things Are Happening In HISD
“I am proud to report that HISD continues to make academic progress district wide,” said a pleased Houston ISD Superintendent Richard A. Carranza as he bragged on the district that has been under his administration for the last 12 months. The Texas Education Agency (TEA), a branch of the state government responsible for overseeing public education, recently released their accountability ratings for school campuses for the 2016-2017 school year and Houston ISD scored well.
