Mayor Whitmire Appoints Veteran Leader as New Economic Development Officer
Mayor John Whitmire announced today that he is appointing Gwendolyn Tillotson-Bell as the City of Houston's Chief Economic Development Officer. She will be responsible for the administration and relationship management of all Tax Increment Investment Zones (TIRZs), Industrial Development Agreements, Management Districts, and Special Districts.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities are in dire need of help. Their lifeline was promised to them this past February from the Trump administration when he paraded close to 100 HBCUs presidents to Washington, D.C. for that massive photo opp when he signed the new HBCU initiative. Announcing that the initiative would be a top priority for his administration, he moved it from the Department of Education to the White House with the new name Presidential Executive Order on The White House Initiative to Promote Excellence and Innovation at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Houston’s Third Gun Buyback Scheduled for Feb. 18th at Deussen Park
Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis and Sheriff Ed Gonzalez have announced a gun buyback at Deussen Park on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 8 a.m. to noon. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner also attended the news conference. The event is part of Harris County’s initiatives to prevent gun violence. This is the third gun buyback co-sponsored by Harris County Precinct One in seven months, resulting in about 2,000 firearms being taken off the street. Residents will be able to turn in firearms in exchange for gift cards worth $50, $100, $150, or $200 at the upcoming buyback, with no questions asked.
