Remembering the Life of Eric Hoffman Lawson
Born in St. Louis on July 15, 1959, Eric Hoffman Lawson is the third child and only son of Audrey Hoffman Lawson and William Alexander Lawson. While Eric was a toddler, his parents and eleven others founded Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in the family living room. Like his siblings, young Eric was baptized by his father and began a lifelong membership at Wheeler Avenue. He was a member of the Chapel Choir, Communications Corps, and Boy Scout Troup 242, becoming an Eagle Scout at the age of fourteen.
NAACP, Baxter Launch Partnership to Improve Access to Kidney Healthcare
African Americans are three times more likely to be impacted by kidney failure
The NAACP announced today that, with support from Baxter International Inc., it is launching a series of town hall events in communities across the country to improve knowledge about kidney disease and dialysis treatment options for African Americans. Baxter’s support will enable the project to bring needed information about prevention and treatment of kidney disease to African Americans, whose rates of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) continue to rise at alarming rates.

44th Annual Jazz & Poetry Black History Celebration

NAACP Legal Defense Fund and Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis File Brief Urging Immediate End to Wealth-Based Bail for People Charged with Misdemeanors in Harris County
The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) and Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis filed an amicus brief in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas in support of a preliminary injunction to immediately halt Harris County’s practice of jailing people charged with misdemeanors solely because they are unable to pay bail.
TSU student awarded BeyGOOD Homecoming scholarship
Jordan Davis, a senior Healthcare Administration major at Texas Southern University is one of eight recipients of the 2018-2019 BeyGOOD Homecoming Scholars Award. He will receive a scholarship totaling $25,000. Davis participates in Habitat for Humanity and is a member of TSU Honors College Enrichment, Urban Gardening, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and is a Young Life Christian Fellowship counselor. He plans to start a home health-care business after graduation.
Gregory School Receives Official Texas Historical Marker
The Houston Public Library celebrated the unveiling of an Official Texas Historical Marker from the Texas Historical Commission for the Gregory School building at the African American History Research Center (AAHRC). OneStar Foundation recently announced that it has awarded $550,000 in funding to support Teach For America’s programs in Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, the Rio Grande Valley, and San Antonio over the next three years. This grant is part of $32.7 million that Texas received in federal AmeriCorps funding from AmeriCorps, formerly known as the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).
