In 2014, the Black Heritage Society (BHS) established the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Project and unveiled one of Houston’s most precious sculptures at MacGregor Park. The memorial honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a larger than life size statue and a chronicle of Dr. King’s life embedded with granite in the floors of the plaza along with historical quotes taken from his speeches.
Texas' Unemployment Rate Falls to New Record Low 3.8 Percent
Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 3.8 percent, down from 3.9 percent in August 2018 and setting a new record for the lowest unemployment rate recorded in four decades. The Texas economy added 15,600 seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs in September. Annual employment growth for Texas was 3.3 percent in September, marking 27 consecutive months of annual growth.
Quavo and Offset reunited to pay tribute to Takeoff at the BET Awards
Quavo and Offset came together for their first public performance in years in an emotional tribute to Takeoff at Sunday’s BET Awards. Together the trio formed the influential hip-hop group Migos, but split in 2021. Takeoff was fatally shot during a private party held in Houston, Texas, in November 2022.
UHD Prepare Teachers to Lead as Principals in New Master of Educational Leadership Program

For more than three decades, the University of Houston-Downtown’s (UHD) College of Public Service (CPS) has been training teachers with stunning results: More than 2,000 teachers trained by UHD have been placed in area school districts. In addition, UHD’s undergraduate teacher-preparation program was among just 23 percent of programs nationwide recently awarded an “A” by the National Council on Teacher Quality for teaching the science of reading.
Third Ward Consortium Receives Grant to install new synthetic sports turf surfaces at Jack Yates High School Athletic Field
A consortium of organizations, has received a field valued at $1,250,000 donated by the Houston Texans, Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation-NRG Park, and Hellas Construction, Inc., $250,000 from the NFL Grassroots Foundation Grant, and a $200,000 NFL Foundation Matching Grant through the Houston Texans to install a new synthetic sports turf surface at Jack Yates High School Athletic Field. Rodney Ellis, Harris County Commissioner Precinct One, was instrumental in the designation of Yates as the recipient of the field.
