Communities In Schools (CIS) of Houston marks the 10th anniversary of its Mental Health Initiative, (MHI) which was launched in September 2012 to expand mental health support across the Houston-area campuses it serves. For the past 43 years, supporting students' mental health and well-being has been at the core of what CIS does. With the MHI, the organization was able to implement targeted efforts to collectively address the growing mental health needs on CIS campuses.

$4.5M Gift Supports Student, Faculty Success and New Lecture Series on Equity and Social Justice

Transformative Gift Initiates First Matching Gift by ‘$100 Million Challenge’ for Total Impact of at Least $6.5M

The University of Houston has received a $4.5 million gift from the Thomas Michael Panos Family Estate to establish an endowed chair in the Cullen College of Engineering; a scholarship endowment available to students throughout the University; and an endowed lecture series focused on equity and social justice, which will reside in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. An additional $2 million has been matched by the University’s new “$100 Million Challenge” Aspire Fund. This is the first matched gift since the fund was established, making the total impact of the Panos Family Estate gift at least $6.5 million.

Students at The Lawson Academy Pledge to End Bullying through Mentoring Program at Foster Elementary

On Wednesday, April 5 from 9:45 am to 10:45 am, Healing Family Inc., will host Safe Kids R-US, an anti-bullying workshop for teen and elementary girls at Foster Elementary (3919 Ward St, Houston, TX 77021). Middle School students from the Lawson Academy will work alongside girls at Foster to empower, inspire and help them develop social skills for future success. The program will include interactive educational activities aimed towards helping students gain a better understanding of the potential long-term implications of bullying, in addition to the value in being a positive influence in the lives of girls.

The Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities (GCPD) today announced the winners of the 2020 Barbara Jordan Media Awards for media content created in 2019. Established in 1982, the Barbara Jordan Media Awards recognize the respectful, accurate portrayal of people with disabilities by media professionals and students. In response to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, GCPD and their partners at the Texas A&M University Department of Communication, Journalism Studies created a virtual awards program honoring the winners and highlighting their outstanding work.
