Comcast today announced that Toni Beck has been appointed vice president of External Affairs for the company’s Houston Region. In this role, Beck will be responsible for managing all external affairs activities for the region, including government affairs, communications, community, media, and public relations.

In an historic election, Claude Cummings Jr. was elected as president of the Communications Workers of America by delegates to the union’s 79th convention and Ameenah Salaam was elected Secretary-Treasurer. Cummings is the first Black man elected as CWA President. Salaam, who was elected by acclamation, is the first Black woman to serve as Secretary-Treasurer.

Naked Wines, the largest 100% direct-to-consumer winery in America, today announced the Montoya Opportunity Fund to help empower the next generation of Latino winemaking talent. Driven by winemaker Macario Montoya, the grant program is a commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in an industry where Latino professionals are vastly underrepresented. In California, Latinos make up only 1% of wine producers in the state and this fund is an effort to grow this number. The program, which is being overseen by Naked Wines with Montoya serving as lead advisor, is open for applications September 15 through October 31, 2023.

The disease is caused by a single mutation in one gene and mainly occurs in people of African descent which causes agonizing pain, strokes and early death. However, recent advances in gene therapy may eventually lead to a cure for sickle cell disease.
