Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Council Member Michael Kubosh, At- Large 3, will present a proclamation to Paris Eley on June 14, 2022, as “Paris Eley Day”. The proclamation will recognize this African American Music Executive who has worked at CBS Records, Epic Records, A&M Records, Atlantic Records, and Motown Records. The presentation is held in conjunction with the national celebration of African American Music Appreciation Month.

HISD to receive $300,000 in support of its new recycling program
Houston Independent School District will be presented with checks totaling $300,000 in funding from business leaders to expand access to recycling within the district. ExxonMobil, Lyondell Basell and Tricon Energy have partnered with HISD to support development of the program, which is scheduled to begin in April. An energetic recycling mascot will be on hand to get students excited about recycling and improving the quality of the community they live in.

Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs Awards $35,000 to Digitally Innovative Arts and Cultural Works
The City of Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA) announced it is awarding $35,000 in grants to 14 individuals and nonprofit organizations that have reimagined their work in the digital realm. The work includes streaming services, virtual reality, and digital curation to deliver manifested live concerts, theatre performances, and literary concepts in online-only platforms.
44th Annual Jazz & Poetry Black History Celebration
Jazz & Poetry, Houston’s premier Educational Outreach Program dedicated to introducing and inspiring school aged youth through poetry and Jazz performances- celebrating Black History Month, will close out its 44th season at Parker Elementary school this Wednesday, February 22. The 45-minute performance is scheduled to begin at 8:15 A.M. and will delight hundreds of students. The teachers and staff have also been seen rocking and clapping along with the students as they take in the live performance all the Jazz & Poetry Ensemble brings to elementary schools.

The couple has donated much needed home restoration and repairs to Kingwood Park High School’s Auto Collision program instructor Jeff Wilson and his family. In coordination with The Collision Industry Foundation (CIF), the LaViolas will help the Wilsons after more than three-feet of water and debris flooded their home in Kingwood during Hurricane Harvey and when the levies were systematically breached in the area.

Houston Grand Opera (HGO) announces that mezzo-soprano Michaela Martens, scheduled to sing the role of Amneris in Verdi’s Aida, recently withdrew from the production due to personal reasons. Renowned soprano Melody Moore, making her role debut as Amneris, sings the first three performances, while HGO Studio Alumna and mezzo-soprano Catherine Martin sings the final three performances. The production runs from Jan. 31 – Feb. 16, 2020 at the Wortham Theater Center.

The 2018 Shriners Hospitals for Children® College Classic concluded tonight at Minute Maid Park with Kentucky being named the Tournament Champions with a perfect 3-0 record. The Wildcats were matched by Mississippi State, which also went 3-0, but earned the tiebreaker with a plus-21 run differential, as opposed to the Bulldogs plus-five mark. Three teams finished 1-2 in Louisiana, Sam Houston State and Vanderbilt, while Houston finished 0-3. The SEC fared well this weekend, as the three clubs posted a collective 7-2 record.
