Lawsuit Against ICE to Release Medically Vulnerable People from Texas Detention Facility
The ACLU of Texas, Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, and the national ACLU today sued U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and DHS officials on behalf of four immigrants detained in Conroe, Texas at the Montgomery Processing Center (MPC). The lawsuit demands that ICE comply with the Fifth Amendment and release the plaintiffs, all of whom are highly vulnerable to serious illness and death from the COVID-19 global pandemic. The suit follows news of an employee at the center who tested positive for the virus on March 23.
Governor Abbott Appoints Four To Texas Commission On Fire Protection
Governor Greg Abbott has reappointed Mike Jones and appointed Bob D. Morgan, Mala Sharma, and J.P. Steelman to the Texas Commission on Fire Protection for terms set to expire on February 1, 2023. The Commission develops and enforces statewide fire service standards and provides education and assistance to the industry.

Jackson Lee: “If we are serious about tackling gun violence, then we must take reasonable, commonsense steps towards that end. This is why, on September 3, 2019, I will be hosting a gun violence prevention summit and roundtable. This meeting will include members of law enforcement, medical professionals, statisticians, parents and community leaders. It will include stakeholders who, like me, are sickened by the incidences of mass shootings and gun violence. It will require attendees to explore how, collectively, we can stem the tide of this uniquely American scourge. All attending will recognize that this time cannot be a time where we do nothing. We must do something. This includes urging the Senate to pass pieces of legislation which have already cleared the House of Representatives. In February, the House passed H.R. 8, legislation designed to implement universal background checks in all gun purchases, and H.R 1112, which would close the “Charleston Loophole.” Passing commonsense gun violence prevention legislation also means ensuring that weapons of war are not readily accessible to the wholesale public, enabling the most perverse and dangerous to inflict carnage. This includes limiting the amount of ammunition readily available, so that the bloodshed inflicted by the shooter in Dayton is not again replicated.”

In the two previous articles, we introduced PrEP as a strategy to protect individuals from getting infected with HIV. Pre-exposure prophylaxis refers to taking a combination of HIV medicines prior to a possible exposure (e.g. before sex, injecting recreational drugs) to protect an uninfected person from the virus. When PrEP first came out a few years ago, I thought it could be effective in helping control the HIV epidemic, but I had concerns.

R.I.P. Grammy Award-Winning Jazz, Pop and R&B Vocal Master Al Jarreau
According to the New York Times, Al Jarreau, a versatile vocalist who sold millions of records and won numerous Grammys for his work in jazz, pop and R&B, died on Sunday in Los Angeles. He was 76. Jarreau is perhaps best known for his 1981 album Breakin’ Away, which contained his highest-charting hit “We’re In This Love Forever,” He also sang the theme song of the late-1980s television series Moonlighting, and was a performer in the 1985 charity song “We Are the World“.
