On Wednesday, July 12, 2023, Congressman Al Green is honored to announce the Ninth Congressional District of Texas received $1,682,008 in AmeriCorps federal funding, administered by OneStar, to organizations operating in Texas. This money will address societal challenges through service opportunities. The grant is designed to incentivize more than 3,500 volunteers to meet local community needs in addition to supporting essential areas such as education, public health, workforce development, and natural disaster response. Prairie View A&M University Again Breaks Records for Freshman Enrollment

For the second year in a row, Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) is on pace to again exceed its enrollment goal. The university is currently trending 8% ahead of last year’s certified enrollment of 8,762. That surge is driven in large part by a nearly 15.0 percent increase in the number of first-time, full-time freshmen. Additionally, PVAMU has noted a 2-4% increase in retention for continuing students.

METRO Bus Operator, METROLift Contract Driver Test Positive for COVID-19

METRO has received confirmation a bus operator and a Yellow Cab contractor who drove for METROLift have tested positive for COVID-19. This brings the total number of cases to 11 METRO employees and two contractors. The Authority continues to track positive test results among its workforce of more than 4200. We are also conducting temperature checks of all employees before they begin their workday.

Lone Star College-Conroe Center Builds and Donates Furniture for Fire Training Facility

Welding students at Lone Star College-Conroe Center designed and built prop furniture and a prop appliance for the new seven-story City of Conroe Fire Training Facility. Students made a bed, table, chairs, sofa, coffee table, end tables and a refrigerator out of scrap metal. The donated props will help fire fighters learn how to search and maneuver around obstacles during fires.

STAT, the nation's leading health, science, and medicine publication, and the Knight Science Journalism Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) announced today the launch of the Sharon Begley-STAT Science Reporting Fellowship, with the goal of diversifying the ranks of science and health journalists and fostering better coverage of science that is relevant to all people. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) will provide $225,000 to support the first two years of the program, named in honor of Sharon Begley, an award-winning science writer for STAT, who died in January 2021 at 64, from complications of lung cancer.

U.S. Department of Education to Launch Application Process to Expand Federal Pell Grant Access for Individuals Who Are Confined or Incarcerated

The U.S. Department of Education (Department) tomorrow will launch a new process through which institutions of higher education can apply to offer postsecondary programs to confined or incarcerated individuals. For the first time in nearly 30 years, as a result of statutory changes enacted through the FAFSA Simplification Act, individuals enrolled in approved prison education programs (PEPs) will be eligible for Federal Pell Grants outside a limited pilot program known as the Second Chance Pell Experiment. The Department will begin accepting applications on July 3, 2023, and will approve applications on a rolling basis.
