Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo declare public health emergency due to COVID-19

Local Health authorities say the action will help save lives and contain spread of the disease.

Mayor Sylvester Turner today signed a proclamation declaring a Local State of Disaster Due to a Public Health Emergency to help contain and mitigate COVID-19 from spreading. As a result of the emergency order, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo will close down immediately and city-sponsored, produced and permitted events will be postponed or cancelled through the end of March.

With tonight’s Game 7 win over the LA Dodgers, the Houston Astros are World Series Champions for the first time in franchise history. Prior to this season, the Astros had gone 55 years without a World Series Championship and had appeared in only one other World Series (2005). The Astros defeated the LA Dodgers by a score of 5-1 tonight at Dodger Stadium.

HISD crowns their 2023 Educators of the year celebrating “A Legacy of Excellence”

The Houston Independent School District hosted their 2023 Educators of the Year at the Hilton Americas-Houston downtown with the theme “A Legacy of Excellence” for the 2022-2023 school year. HISD’s 2022 Elementary Teacher of the Year, Maria Soria and Secondary Teacher of the Year, Kaylin McNary served as this year’s hosts. Attendees were welcomed to a grand banquet space with a 1920s theme and décor accompanied by a 1920s big band for entertainment.

Multifamily and Townhome Housing Growing to Meet Houston Needs

Although single-family detached homes constitute 61 percent of Houston’s housing stock, the number of multifamily properties and townhomes is growing at a faster rate and is consistent with Houstonians’ living preferences, according to a new report from Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research. However, the report noted, the area’s growth has eclipsed housing production and resulted in a tighter market.
