Obesity in Hispanic Adolescents Linked to Nearly Sixfold Increase in High Blood Pressure

Obesity raises the prevalence of high blood pressure among adolescents but the increase is particularly pronounced among Hispanics compared to white, African-American or Asian ethnic groups, according to a study by researchers at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). Results were published in the journal Pediatrics.

Former Harris County Jailer Charged With Manslaughter in Inmate Death

A former detention officer at the Harris County Jail was indicted Thursday and charged with felony manslaughter in the February 2021 death of a jail inmate, the first time criminal charges have been filed against a detention officer in an in-custody death at the jail.

Discovery Green, the 12-acre park in the heart of downtown Houston, announces The Ice powered by Green Mountain Energy will be open for the Winter season beginning Nov. 13, 2020 through Jan. 31, 2021. This is the first large-scale event to be held at the park since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Supporting the health and safety of the community, Discovery Green is implementing procedures and protocols following guidance by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

High school leaders will learn about city government, voice issues impacting communities

Mayor Sylvester Turner administered the oath of office to 20 high school students appointed to the Mayor’s Youth Council at an inauguration ceremony held on September 28 in the City Hall council chambers. In attendance were students’ family members, City officials, and staff. Established in 1998, the MYC provides youth the opportunity to learn about city government, share issues of concern with city officials, and gain civic leadership skills through community service activities. The council is modeled after the elected City Council, with members representing all single-member and at-large districts.

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act reimagines policing for the 21st Century by banning chokeholds, stopping no-knock warrants, combatting racial profiling, eliminating qualified immunity, and mandating data collection, including body cameras and dashboard cameras.
