Texas Southern University is set to host its annual Communication Week, April 17-21, with keynote speaker Dr. James L. Conyers, Director of the African American Studies Program at the University of Houston. Conyers is an acclaimed author of many publications including; Black Pioneers: Images of the Black Experience on the North American Frontier, The Ideology of Racism: From Slavery, to Plessy, to Affirmative Action, to Racial Healing, Let's Talk! and Visions of Freedom on the Great Plains.
Hurricane Harvey Grant Provides Financial Relief for Business Owners
Local Houston organization Dreampreneur, Inc. provides grants to eligible business owners negatively affected by the storm
The catastrophic rainfall from Hurricane Harvey set a record in the continental United States dropping nearly 30 trillion gallons of water on the fourth largest city in the nation over a six-day period. Chuck Watson, who studies the economic impact of natural disasters for scientific research company Enki Holdings, estimates the cost to the economy from the flooding to be $30 billion. Numerous companies shut down in Harvey's wake, creating a grinding halt in one of the nation’s top five largest economies.
Houston Chamber Choir presents By Local at South Main Baptist Church on Nov. 16 featuring Houston composers
Third concert of the season starts at 7:30 p.m.
Houston’s vibrant and active arts scene is enriched by a growing number of A-List composers. In Houston Chamber Choir’s third concert of the season, titled By Local, five of these composers are in the spotlight with a diverse program showcasing their immense creative talents. The Houston Chamber Choir will bring its special flair to these pieces. The evening extravaganza will include talks from each of the presenting composers throughout the concert, including Mark Buller, Daniel Knaggs, Pierre Jalbert, Rob Landes and David Ashley White. As an additional treat, patrons will enjoy viewing artwork created by several of Houston’s local visual artists who will display their pieces in a joint gallery exhibition and reception prior to the concert.

Over eight thousand people attended the 3rd annual Houston Black Heritage Festival presented by Ebony Magazine. This year’s festival served as an uplifting evening for the city of Houston after the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. A recent report, Driven by Debt: Houston, estimated that not only does this program impact hundreds of thousands of drivers in the Greater Houston area, but that those impacted are disproportionately Black and low-income residents.
