Astros Coach Rich Dauer Recovering From Surgery

First base coach on the road to recovery at Houston Methodist Hospital

Houston Astros first base coach Rich Dauer suffered a blood clot to his brain and was rushed to Houston Methodist Hospital immediately after the parade celebration on Friday afternoon. The doctors at Houston Methodist performed emergency surgery. Surgery was successful with many answered prayers and Coach Dauer is on the road to recovery. The Dauer family specifically requests for all media to respect the family’s privacy during this time.

Class of 2020 Survey: Half of Graduating Seniors Change Plans for After High School Due to COVID-19

Changes Include Delaying Start of College, Working for Money, and Switching Career Plans, According to Research by JA and PMIEF

Roughly half (49%) of Class of 2020 graduating seniors say their plans for after high school have changed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new survey by Junior Achievement (JA) and the PMI Educational Foundation (PMIEF). Of those whose plans have changed, more than a third (36%) say they will now work, nearly as many (32%) expect to delay their start date for college, and almost a fifth (16%) changed the career path they wish to pursue. The survey of 1,000 U.S. teens graduating high school in 2020 was conducted by Wakefield Research for JA and PMIEF in support of new educational initiatives by the two organizations.

Rep. Reynolds files Sugarland 95 Legislation

In 2018, the discovery of an unmarked burial ground at the former Imperial State Prison Farm site in Sugar Land drew national attention to an abhorrent chapter in history. Archaeologists at the site found the skeletal remains of 95 victims of the convict leasing system, which was used after the Civil War to replicate the oppression that existed under slavery. Although the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibited involuntary servitude, it created an exemption for people convicted of crimes. Southern states, including Texas, took advantage by enacting "Black Codes," laws that applied only to African Americans, who could be prosecuted criminally for such offenses as loitering, breaking curfew, or not carrying proof of employment.
