The League of Women Voters of Florida and the Florida State Conference of the NAACP filed suit in federal court today against Florida’s secretary of state, charging that the state’s voter registration application violates the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA). The civil rights organizations allege that the form’s lack of information about the voter eligibility requirements for Floridians with past convictions creates confusion, impedes the organizations’ voter registration activities, and puts people in danger of criminal penalties.

New Data Reveals Neighborhoods Impacted By Urban Heat Effect
On August 7, 2020, the Houston Harris Heat Action Team (H3AT)—a collaboration be- tween Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC), the City of Houston, Harris County Public Health (HCPH), and The Nature Conservancy of Texas (TNC) — held a one-day urban heat island mapping effort with the help of 84 community scien- tists, and funding support from Lowe’s and Shell. The effort was part of the 2020 Heat Watch program led by CAPA Strategies and the National Oceanic and At- mospheric Administration (NOAA), and it resulted in a total of 320 square miles of Houston and Harris County being mapped by local residents.

New Harris County Program Helps Struggling Families With Financial Instability
Harris County officials recently introduced a groundbreaking pilot program called "Uplift Harris" aimed at assisting low-income residents facing financial instability. This initiative, funded through the federal American Rescue Plan Act, will provide eligible individuals with a monthly stipend of $500 for up to 18 months. With an allocated budget of $20.5 million, the program will be overseen by the Harris County Public Health Department. As we head further into summer, my City Council colleagues and I continue to fight for district projects in the City of Houston's Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). Since being sworn into office, I continue to see, year after year, the amount of tax dollars for CIP projects allocated inequitably across the 11 council districts. This year's proposed plan, which was given to city council members late last week, shows a total of 7% of all CIP dollars going towards District E, doubling the amount of CIP dollars we received last year. Last year District E only received 3% of the total CIP dollars distributed among Council Districts.
