Still, a lot is happening throughout our departments to keep the City on track working for you and to keep my administration's priorities and initiatives moving forward. Governor Abbott Appoints Eight To Rehabilitation Council Of Texas
Governor Greg Abbott has reappointed Lonny Matthew “Matt” Berend, JoAnne Fluke, Paul Hunt, and Crystal Stark to the Rehabilitation Council of Texas for terms set to expire on October 29, 2021, and Cheryl Fuller for a term at the pleasure of the Governor. Additionally, he appointed Colton J. Read, Lisa Cowart, and Joseph “Joe” Powell for terms set to expire on October 29, 2021. The council works with the Texas Workforce Commission to advocate for people with disabilities in the vocational rehabilitation process.

On Jan. 16, communities across the country will celebrate the National Day of Racial Healing (#NDORH) with events and activities as distinct as their participants. High school students, recording artists, civic leaders, teachers, librarians, college students and more will come together in auditoriums, museums, libraries and churches, or on social networks. The array of activities mark the second annual National Day of Racial Healing, established by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) in 2017 to promote healing as a critical path for ending racial bias and creating a society in which all children can thrive.
Harmony Public Schools Awarded $27.8 Million U.S. DOE Grant For Campus Leadership Program
“Great teachers deserve to be treated as the professionals they are and to be compensated accord- ingly,” U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said in a statement Wednesday, September 1. “All too often, though, they lack access to relevant pro- to rethink all of that, and they have risen to the chal- lenge.” The new funding brings the total amount awarded to Harmony by the Department of Education within the past few years to $92.5 million. • In 2012, the DOE awarded Harmony a $30 million Race to the Top grant to support locally developed plans to personalize and deepen student learning, directly improve student achievement and edu- cator effectiveness, close achievement gaps, and prepare every student to succeed in college and their careers. • In 2016, the DOE awarded Harmony a $26.7 mil- lion Teacher Incentive Fund grant to develop a merit-based system for rewarding its highest-per- forming teachers. (The system, known as H-STEP, was foundational in Harmony being named to the Texas Education Agency’s inaugural class of Teacher Incentive Allotment districts in Fall 2020.) • In 2018, the DOE awarded Harmony an $8 million Education Innovation Research grant to build upon Harmony’s project-based learning STEM model for Grade 6-12 students by introducing similar curricula to students in Grade K-5, and by creating a system of support and professional development for elementary school teachers. Harmony Public Schools is a Texas-born, Texas-wide public charter school system with cam- puses serving PreK-Grade 12 students in 23 cities across the state, including Greater Houston, DFW, San Fatih Ay – CEO/Superintendent, Harmony Schools Antonio, Austin, El Paso, Waco, Lubbock, Odessa, Bryan, Beaumont, and the Rio Grande Valley. Federal Court Invalidates Part of Texas Congressional Map for Violating Voting Rights Act and U.S. Constitution
Federal judges invalidated two Texas congressional districts Tuesday, ruling that they must be fixed by either the Legislature or a federal court. A three-judge panel in San Antonio unanimously ruled that Congressional Districts 27 and 35 violate the U.S. Constitution and the federal Voting Rights Act.
‘Hidden Figures’ Tops ‘Rogue One,’ With $22.8M #1 Debut at Box Office
With the always present caveat that “rank doesn’t matter,” it turns out that Hidden Figures was the top movie of the weekend, not Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. As you probably know, the weekend box office that everyone reports on Sunday is comprised of estimates and when the rankings are close the order can sometimes shift when the final numbers drop. So yeah, Hidden Figures earned a terrific $22.8 million, about $1m more than estimated, which is a sign that the film is building on its buzz and word-of-mouth.
