The beginning of summer has been busy here at City Hall. As many of you may have seen, City Council passed the $5.2 billion Fiscal Year 2018 Operating Budget this week, which includes $2.4 billion from the tax-generated General Fund. For the second year in a row Mayor Turner achieved unanimous support of his bare bones budget. I believe that Mayor Turner is on the right track, as this budget saw department expenditures decrease by nearly $50 million and identified strategies within departments to assist with creating further reductions in the future.

Mayor Sylvester Turner led the rededication ceremony of Emancipation Park, together with OST/Almeda Redevelopment Corridors TIRZ#7, Emancipation Park Conservancy and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. A day long festival (10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) was held in conjunction with the rededication.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, an estimated 738,140 people in Harris County were considered food insecure, and at least 286,000 live in a food desert. As of January 2021, there are 360,000 children in Harris County experiencing food insecurity.

National Civil Rights Group and Hundreds of Medical Professionals Call on the Trump Administration and States to Release Racial Data for COVID-19 Tests, Cases and Outcomes
Today, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and nearly 400 medical professionals issued a demand letter to the United States Department of Health and Human Services and its relevant sub-agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calling for the release of daily racial and ethnic demographic data related to COVID-19 testing, cases, and patient outcomes. The Lawyers’ Committee also filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the CDC seeking race and ethnicity data for COVID-19 tests, cases and outcomes.
