Advocates Push to Pardon 110 Black Soldiers Guilty in 1917 Houston Riots
The South Texas College of Law Houston, the local NAACP chapter, advocates and supporters plan to push for the pardon of 110 Black soldiers convicted of mutiny and rioting at Camp Logan in 1917, the Houston Chronicle reported. The soldiers were hanged, executed or sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty in the 1917 riots, which occurred after months of racial tensions toward the all-Black Third Battalion of the United States Army’s 24th Infantry Regiment.

Texas Woman Dies of Flesh-eating Bacteria Caused by Hurricane Harvey
A 77-year-old Houston woman died earlier this month from a flesh-eating bacteria, which she contracted after falling into Harvey floodwaters in her home, authorities said. Nancy Reed, of the Kingwood area of northeast Houston, died on Sept. 15 of flood-related necrotizing fasciitis, more commonly referred to as flesh-eating bacteria, after she fell into contaminated flood water in her home, the Harris County medical examiner's office ruled.

Department of Education Announces $3.2 Billion in Additional HEERF Funds to Support Students
This morning, the Department of Education (ED) announced the release of $3.2 billion in additional emergency grants under the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). The purpose of these funds is to help historic and under-resourced institutions develop programs that expand opportunity for all students, including those aimed at engaging disconnected students, expanding mental health services and improving retention rates.

Texas Southern University (TSU) is releasing its fall performance measures through its agency submission of the 84th regular session of the Automated Budget and Evaluation System of Texas (ABEST). The report indicates significant growth in full-time freshmen earning a baccalaureate degree in four to six years and a higher persistence rate of freshmen entering the University.
Harmony Public Schools Awarded $27.8 Million U.S. DOE Grant For Campus Leadership Program
“Great teachers deserve to be treated as the professionals they are and to be compensated accord- ingly,” U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said in a statement Wednesday, September 1. “All too often, though, they lack access to relevant pro- to rethink all of that, and they have risen to the chal- lenge.” The new funding brings the total amount awarded to Harmony by the Department of Education within the past few years to $92.5 million. • In 2012, the DOE awarded Harmony a $30 million Race to the Top grant to support locally developed plans to personalize and deepen student learning, directly improve student achievement and edu- cator effectiveness, close achievement gaps, and prepare every student to succeed in college and their careers. • In 2016, the DOE awarded Harmony a $26.7 mil- lion Teacher Incentive Fund grant to develop a merit-based system for rewarding its highest-per- forming teachers. (The system, known as H-STEP, was foundational in Harmony being named to the Texas Education Agency’s inaugural class of Teacher Incentive Allotment districts in Fall 2020.) • In 2018, the DOE awarded Harmony an $8 million Education Innovation Research grant to build upon Harmony’s project-based learning STEM model for Grade 6-12 students by introducing similar curricula to students in Grade K-5, and by creating a system of support and professional development for elementary school teachers. Harmony Public Schools is a Texas-born, Texas-wide public charter school system with cam- puses serving PreK-Grade 12 students in 23 cities across the state, including Greater Houston, DFW, San Fatih Ay – CEO/Superintendent, Harmony Schools Antonio, Austin, El Paso, Waco, Lubbock, Odessa, Bryan, Beaumont, and the Rio Grande Valley. First African American Major General Has Died
Houston’s own Marcelite Jordan Harris became the first African American woman to be named a major general in the U.S. Military. On September 7th she sadly passed away at the age of 75.
James Harden Named NBA MVP
