The Houston Area Urban League’s coveted 54th annual Equal Opportunity Day Gala awarded HISD’s Superintendent, Millard House II with this year’s Black Excellence award in Education. This year’s theme “Celebrating Black Excellence” paid recognition to House and other community leaders for making strides to enable black people and marginalized communities to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power, and civil rights. House was selected for this special honor due to his career achievements and service to the community making exceptional educational advancements since beginning his time with the district in 2021.

Austin's ADDERLEY SCHOOL for the Performing Arts is thrilled to announce its new status as a Texas nonprofit and soon to be 501(c)(3), which will go by the name THE ADDERLEY SCHOOL. The nonprofit will provide partial and full scholarships to underserved students from low income Austin communities and underwrite operational costs. As a nonprofit, Adderley will "level the playing field," giving all Austin children the opportunity to grow and flourish in its transformative theater school program, regardless of their ability to pay tuition.

CoolxDad’s Annual Gift-Giving Project Returns
This year’s annual Color Box initiative – a donation-based holiday gift drive powered by the nonprofit organization CoolxDad – will take place November 1 to 30, 2022. CoolxDad encourages businesses and individuals throughout the Houston area to donate Christmas presents to underserved kids in the Project Row Houses community. A number of businesses will host drop-off sites for donations. CoolxDad is specifically asking for kids’ toys, electronics, and new clothing (all sizes) with a value of up to $75.00. Color Box will feature a series of events this year, includinga kick-off ceremony, a gift-wrapping event, and a fundraiser, with all funds to go toward future initiatives.

636,800 Houston Workers Directly Impacted by COVID-19
The coronavirus pandemic has led to an unprecedented economic shutdown as thousands of “nonessential” businesses have closed their doors. The crisis disproportionately affects the 21.3% of American workers in retail, leisure, and hospitality who not only face lack of work, but also suffer from long-standing, below-average wages. According to the latest annual data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average hourly wage for workers in the retail trade and leisure and hospitality sectors was just $19.70 and $16.55 in 2019, compared to $28 per hour across all workers.

They are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. This reunion marks the celebration of Tanabata (meaning the evening of the seventh).
