Mable Haddock, pioneering public media figure and champion of Black television and film, has died. The founding president and first CEO of the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) — now Black Public Media (BPM) — died on Saturday, July 23, 2022, in New York City at the age of 74 of kidney disease after a brief hospitalization. BPM is the Harlem-based national media arts nonprofit dedicated to creating and producing media content about the Black experience.

George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, recently named its North Plaza in honor of Roger Wilkins, a former long-time faculty member who died this past March. Angel Cabrera, president of George Mason University, said at the dedication ceremony, “when Roger came to George Mason, few knew much about this fledgling university in the suburbs of Washington D.C. Roger was one of those intellectual pioneers who helped put this university on the map.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton intervened on Tuesday to defend the Houston-area school district in its lawsuit with the student, India Landry. Ms. Landry, 18, filed a lawsuit after she was expelled last year from Windfern High School.

New School Buses to Have Seat Belts Under Texas Law
Starting this month, Texas school districts in the market for new school buses must ensure they have shoulder-to-lap seat belts for all riders. The three-point seat belt law replaces a 2007 law that offered money to districts that opted to install seat belts in their school buses.
