New York resident Frederick Joseph launched a GoFundMe to take Harlem children to see Black Panther in theaters next month. In just a few days, he raised over $30,000. Today, he announced the #BlackPantherChallenge to ask others to start a GoFundMe in their community to take more kids to watch Black Panther in the theater.

Organizations combining forces to reduce home fire injuries and death

Volunteers and leaders from the American Red Cross of Greater Houston and the Houston Fire Department (HFD) will be going door-to-door in historic Third Ward this Saturday, July 15, to install free 10-year lithium ion battery smoke alarms and educate residents about fire safety. It marks the first installation in which the Red Cross and HFD are teaming up, with the goal of working together to install 3,000 free smoke alarms in Houston homes over the next 12 months.

Houston Jazz Collective is an organization that incorporates the genres of music and art featuring major talents to pay tribute to accomplished jazz musicians. Past events have included outstanding Houston-based jazz musicians such as Frank Lacy, Kirk Whalum, Billy Harper, Bob Dorough, and Chris Dave paying tribute to Arnet Cobb. In this year's events Shelly Carrol paying tribute to John Coltrane and supreme love. The Houston Jazz Collective combines performances with outreach programs “The Houston Center for After School Jazz Programs”. The program exposes youth to the arts through a jazz curriculum that educates giving them the understanding of jazz in the original form. Port Of Houston 2020 Budget – $425 Million and 0.09% To Black Firms

Today, the Houston Port Authority released the results of a disparity study looking at the access that minority and women-owned businesses have to the Port Authority’s contracting dollars. In response, County Commissioner Rodney Ellis, who championed Harris County’s disparity study, and advocated for the Port Authority to complete a study as well, issued the following statement:

TSU Board Approves Temporary Revision to Admissions Standards Due to COVID-19

The Texas Southern University Board of Regents unanimously approved a temporary addition to the existing university admissions standards, allowing an important COVID-19-related exemption for first-time, incoming freshman who meet specific criteria. TSU will provide automatic admission for any student in the top 25 percent of his/her graduating class who has a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Additionally, these students will not need to present ACT or SAT scores. This change is effective immediately and is due to limited or lack of ACT and SAT testing as a result of COVID-19.
