The American Heart Association today announced details of its new Kids Heart Challenge™, which includes jump rope, basketball, dance and warrior (obstacle course) components. The Kids Heart Challenge™ marks the Association’s 40th year working in schools and meets the changing needs of today’s youth and educators by preparing kids for success through physical and emotional well-being.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston (BGCGH) seeks to serve as a community resource to provide guidance for parents and children who may be struggling with a higher degree of stress during the COVID-19 pandemic, which could include food insecurity, job losses and just plain “cabin fever.” When kids are in a Club setting at BGCGH, part of the job of staff and volunteers is to recognize signs of stress in children and help them learn coping skills so they can lead a happy, productive life.

Healthy, fresh food should be affordable and accessible to everyone. Unfortunately, that is not the case for many Harris County residents. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, an estimated 738,140 people in Harris County were considered food insecure, and at least 286,000 live in a food desert. As of January 2021, there are 360,000 children in Harris County experiencing food insecurity.
