In response to the pandemic, biopharmaceutical researchers have developed multiple vaccines that are now authorized for use. While vaccines are critical to saving lives and getting the country back to normal, many individuals have questions about getting vaccinated. Black and Brown Americans in particular have important questions and seek to understand how the vaccines were developed and ensuring their safety. Double Emmy Award-winning actor and author, GregAlan Williams, is confirmed as a featured author at the 2017 National Black Book Festival, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Williams is most recently known for his portrayal as the villainous, Robert "Mac" McCready, on OWN's hit drama series, Greenleaf, but is also known for a number of memorable roles across television (The Sopranos, The Game, The West Wing) and film (Remember the Titans, The Preacher’s Kid, Terminator Genysis). Williams' novel, Heart of a Woman, which was originally published in 2009, has recently been re-released in audio book format. This will be Williams’ debut as a featured author at the Festival and his appearance will be on Saturday, Oct. 28 @ 3:00 p.m.

First Presbyterian Church of Houston is expecting a parade of vehicles Tuesday morning as it hosts one of the biggest Feeding Houston’s Heroes (FHH) events yet. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston announces that the team from Houston Texans Teen Club was named the winner of the Building Industry Leaders (BIL) Urban Plan competition, a program of the Urban Land Institute and funded by a grant from retail electricity provider Reliant. Each of the five team members who created the winning case study received a $1,000 scholarship toward future education. Other teams participating in the competition included the Morefield Club, Galveston Island Teen Club and the Allen Parkway Club participated.
Another Black Man Arrested by Police… This Time For Leaving His Car Running in a Parking Lot
Craig Williams, a 40-year old African American man from Sacramento, California, was recently detained and arrested by a white police officer for leaving his car idling outside of a local 7-Eleven. Cell phone video and the officer’s body camera shows Craig being arrested after resisting arrest with a brief struggle with the officer.

Society for the Performing Arts (SPA) announced today that June Christensen, long-time SPA President and CEO, has advised SPA’s board of directors that she will retire at the end of 2018. Christensen joined SPA in 1989 and was promoted to her current position in 2007.

For the 11th consecutive year, DeBakey High School for Health Professions topped the 2019 CHILDREN AT RISK list of best public schools in the Houston area. HISD’s Eastwood Academy ranked third in the Houston area, Carnegie Vanguard came in fourth, East Early College was sixth among local public high schools, and Challenge Early College ranked eighth regionally.

Court Refuses to Lift Barriers for Black Voters in Georgia
Judge denies motion for preliminary injunction, which challenged multiple provisions of S.B. 202 for intentionally discriminating against Black voters
A Georgia district court on Wednesday refused to temporarily lift restrictions to absentee voting, drop boxes and other voting methods that will make it harder for Black voters to cast a ballot for the 2024 election. Voting rights organizations had filed five motions for preliminary injunctions to lift barriers to voting as part of Sixth District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church v. Kemp, saying these restrictions discriminated against Black communities.
