Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher Co-sponsors Legislation to Establish Juneteenth as a Federal Holiday

Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) announced that she joined Houston Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18) as an original co-sponsor of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, H.R. 7232, to designate June 19 as federal holiday each year. On June 19, 1865, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger announced in Galveston, Texas that “all slaves are free” and that there would be “an absolute equality of personal rights.”

Mom Claims Toilet Cleaner Spill Killed Her 5-Year-Old: Police

A Houston mother faced a judge Tuesday night after police say she confessed to hiding her 5-year-old's body inside an apartment closet. Detectives say 27-year-old Priscilla Nicole Torres wrapped her 5-year-old daughter, Sierra Patino, in a blanket and put her in a closet. Police say Torres told them she was too scared to call 911 after her daughter died because she feared CPS involvement.

Statement by Senator Borris L. Miles Regarding Governor Abbott Vetoing SB 390, HB 1120 and HB 1174

"I am very disappointed and shocked with the Governor's veto of SB 390, which would create the Northeast Houston Redevelopment District. The governor's office did not indicate any problem with this bill until late in the session but worked with my staff on changes to eliminate concerns and even helped clear procedural hurdles to get the bill passed. This part of Senate District 13 has been in desperate need of economic development for years and was one of the areas hit the hardest by Hurricane Harvey.

HISD to virtually announce winners of 2020 annual holiday greeting card student art competition

18 finalists selected from 99 student entries

The Houston Independent School District will unveil the winners of the district’s 2020 holiday greeting card student art competition on Monday. This year, 18 students from HISD elementary, middle, and high schools have been named finalists out of a total of 99 student entries. The finalists were chosen by the district’s area superintendents.
