Black Public Media Wins $40,000 NEA Grant
National Endowment for the Arts award to support the Harlem-based media arts organization’s residency program at The Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts
The Harlem-based national media arts nonprofit Black Public Media (BPM) has received a $40,000 award from the National Endowment for the Arts’ Grants for Arts Projects program. The award will support its fellowship and residency program for new works in immersive, interactive and emerging media at the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The initiative is a part of BPMplus, Black Public Media’s program designed to increase Black participation in emerging tech storytelling, which was founded in 2018. The BPM project is one of 1,130 projects across the country, totaling more than $31 million, that were selected during the NEA’s second round of Grants for Arts Projects FY2023 funding cycle.

Lone Star College-Conroe Center Builds and Donates Furniture for Fire Training Facility
Welding students at Lone Star College-Conroe Center designed and built prop furniture and a prop appliance for the new seven-story City of Conroe Fire Training Facility. Students made a bed, table, chairs, sofa, coffee table, end tables and a refrigerator out of scrap metal. The donated props will help fire fighters learn how to search and maneuver around obstacles during fires.

U.S. Department of Commerce Invests to Spur Small Business Development in Hurricane Harvey-Impacted Dickinson, Te
Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced that the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $3 million grant to Dickinson Economic Development Corporation in Texas, to help establish the Gulf Coast Market by renovating a storm-damaged, 30,000 sq. ft., building. The EDA grant, to be matched with $1.3 million in local investment, is expected to help create nearly 400 jobs.
