A series of events at six stores across the country will bring to life the rich legacy of achievement and entertainment of Hispanic Americans in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month
This fall, Macy’s is once again set to honor the rich legacy and cultural impact of Hispanic Americans, during its annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. Customers nationwide will have the opportunity to attend special in-store events focused on exploring and exalting Hispanic and Latino culture, in particular the impact Latinas have had on entertainment. Helping Macy’s celebrate will be celebrity guest, Gaby Espino.

Governor Greg Abbott has reappointed Chip VanSteenberg and Von Washington, Sr. to the Commission on State Emergency Communications for terms set to expire on September 1, 2027. The commission is charged with administering the state 9-1-1 service program and the statewide poison control program.

Hogg Foundation to Award $2 Million in Grants for 2020 Census, Black Communities a Key Focus
This year, the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health is celebrating 80 years of supporting the mental health and well-being of Texans. As part of their anniversary efforts, the foundation is accepting proposals for the Texas Communities Count initiative, which will support complete count efforts in Texas for the 2020 U.S. Census. The foundation plans to award grants totaling $2 million.

The Southern Poverty Law Center and the Washington-Baltimore News Guild Local 32035, TNG-CWA Reach Collective Bargaining Agreement
TODAY, The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and the Washington-Baltimore News Guild Local 32035, TNG-CWA (the Guild of WBNG) announced their first collective bargaining agreement on July 15, 2022, covering approximately 250 of SPLC’s employees. The contract reflects the values and commitment of both the SPLC and the Guild to social, racial and economic justice. Over the life of the three-year contract, the average wage will increase by more than 11 percent for employees. Beginning November 1,2022, the minimum wage for new SPLC employees will be over $20 per hour.

Civic Heart Community Services (Civic Heart) relocated its headquarters to One Emancipation Center at 3131 Emancipation Avenue in Houston’s Third Ward in June 2023. The 34-year-old organization, the largest black-founded non-profit organization in the Gulf coast region, formerly known as Change Happens!, recently announced its name change to Civic Heart Community Services.
Rothko Chapel to Host 34th Annual Houston Interfaith Thanksgiving Service
The theme of the service is “care for creation”
On Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., the Rothko Chapel will host the 34th Annual Houston Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. In advance of the Chapel’s scheduled 2019 Symposium, “Toward a Better Future: Transforming the Climate Crisis,” the theme of this service will be “care for creation.” Leaders and members of nine different faith communities from across the city will come together to share prayers, readings, chants, and reflections on the theme “care for creation.” This year’s service will include Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, and Zoroastrian traditions. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Remains Quiet On Whether The State Will Opt Out Of Refugee Program
A large majority of the country’s governors have told the Trump administration that their states will continue accepting refugees, but with less than three weeks left to make up his mind, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott hasn’t made clear if he’ll add his name to that list. Governors, mayors, county judges and other elected officials have until Jan. 21 to notify the U.S. State Department if they will continue participating in the refugee resettlement program.
Harris County Attorney Menefee Opens Applications for 2nd High School Summer Legal Academy
The office of Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee is now accepting applications for the 2023 Summer Legal Academy (SLA), a two-week educational readiness program for high school students to learn more about what it takes to become an attorney. The inaugural program launched in the summer of 2022, yielding more than 250 applications. The 2022 class of 21 students came from 21 different high schools in six local school districts (including HISD, Alief ISD, Klein ISD, and more).
