On Friday, April 2, 2021, Congressman Al Green hosted a press conference in Houston’s Chinatown with local and state elected officials as well as community leaders to condemn anti-Asian violence and discrimination. Congressman Green traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, on Sunday, March 28, 2021, with fellow CAPAC members to visit the sites of the March 16 shootings and to meet with two of the victims’ families. He has also spoken out against the recent physical attack on a 65-year-old Asian woman in Manhattan.

Two men were sentenced this week to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing a friend they got in a fight with in 2021, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
Advocates Push to Pardon 110 Black Soldiers Guilty in 1917 Houston Riots
The South Texas College of Law Houston, the local NAACP chapter, advocates and supporters plan to push for the pardon of 110 Black soldiers convicted of mutiny and rioting at Camp Logan in 1917, the Houston Chronicle reported. The soldiers were hanged, executed or sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty in the 1917 riots, which occurred after months of racial tensions toward the all-Black Third Battalion of the United States Army’s 24th Infantry Regiment.

Houston Astros Welcome Back Verlander
In a stunning turn of events, the New York Mets and the Houston Astros have reportedly agreed to a monumental trade involving the three-time Cy Young winner, Justin Verlander. MLB.com's Mark Feinsand broke the news, disclosing that New York will be acquiring two talented outfielders, Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford, in exchange for the veteran pitcher. Gilbert, Houston's top prospect and ranked 68th in all of baseball, is set to join the Mets' roster alongside Clifford, Houston's fourth-ranked prospect.

Washington, D.C., city attorney George Valentine was black, brilliant, and fit. But after contracting COVID-19, he became so weak, he had trouble moving and even speaking. When it got to the point where he could barely breathe, George called an ambulance and waited on the steps of his house for it to arrive. Every second he waited must have seemed like an eternity. Two days later, George died. He was 66 and had suffered from diabetes and high blood pressure before getting sick with the coronavirus.
Twenty-six Texas Schools Named 2021 National Blue Ribbon Schools
U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona today recognized 325 schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2021, including 26 schools in Texas. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Secretary Cardona made the announcement during his Return to School Road Trip, while visiting an awardee school, Walter R. Sundling Jr. High School, in Palatine, Illinois.
