Leading HBCU scholarship program to provide 132 incoming college freshmen $40,000 awards
Representatives of The Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) today welcomed 132 new scholarship recipients from 26 states across the nation. The students will begin school at 26 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) this Fall and will major in more than a dozen science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. They join nearly 300 current FOSSI scholarship recipients.
Texas Legislative Black Caucus George Floyd Act
On Thursday, August 13, the Texas Legislative Black Caucus announced details for the George Floyd Act, a piece of comprehensive legislation they will file when the Texas Legislature meets again in January 2021. The law will honor the life and memory of George Floyd, a native Houstonian who died in May of this year when a police officer knelt on his neck for eight minutes and forty-six seconds.
School Closures for Feb. 15-16 Ahead of Winter Storm
It will be a day at home for many students across our area in preparation of the winter storm. County and city officials have warned that the streets will be covered in ice and that is something most Houstonians are not use. They want everyone to stay off the roads unless it is an emergency. School closures will help with keeping people safe and avoiding accidents. Use the next 48 hours to be prepared to shelter in place at least for two days.

Healthy, fresh food should be affordable and accessible to everyone. Unfortunately, that is not the case for many Harris County residents. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, an estimated 738,140 people in Harris County were considered food insecure, and at least 286,000 live in a food desert. As of January 2021, there are 360,000 children in Harris County experiencing food insecurity.
Houston Chamber Choir returns to Miller Outdoor Theatre after three-year absence with free concert “This Land Is Your Land” on Oct. 29
The Grammy® Award-winning Houston Chamber Choir, led by Robert Simpson, is back at Miller Outdoor Theatre for the first time since 2019 presenting “This Land Is Your Land” as the second performance of its 2022-2023 season. The concert on Saturday, Oct. 29 is free and open to the public at Houston’s iconic outdoor performance space in Hermann Park. The Choir missed 2020 and 2021 Miller Outdoor Theatre performances due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
